I climbed on the bus one day.
It was an AC bus ,DTC.Yes the lovely stark red colored buses plying on delhi roads. Bought the ticket and to my good fortune got an empty seat at the back at the higher end of the bus. I started observing people stepping on the bus. Women especially .Young girls specifically . No i am no pervert or stalker or the guy that stares at women but just trying to pass my time with an aim to draw a conclusion to a fact that had irritated me. But to that later.
While preparing for the interview in college the guy with the tie said eye contact is mother of all rejections. Is it? I asked. Yes dude. The thing is ,while an interview is on when you sit with a straight back on the chair answering all the questions correct but nevertheless your eyes keep flickering up down right left ,tensed or red ,or anything.. it might send a wrong signal .You might be seen first of low confidence, complacent , docile, nervous, fearful , easy to dominate and all those words which one would not like to see in him/herself.Right.
When i see girls climbing up the bus , why the bloody hell they always have their eyes down towards the floor .When someone is looking at them , they look down. Some conductor is talking they look down. When they ask a stranger a way or a bus stop they look towards towards the floor. If they want to go towards the exit and excuse me, they say while looking towards the floor. Ask the driver something ,they look sideways. I am not talking about the whole junta ,but a big proportion of them . The response varies according to the gender ,age and appearance (expected). Younger they might look. Older uncles , their is no hesitation .Nada ,nil. Mid age people always a high amount of possibly of apprehension unless totally compelled to talk or say something.
Girls and women i respect .Very highly. Reason many .....known none. Dear girls and women .You are Achievers ,future ,beautiful. Why the hesitation? Why the apprehensive mood. Or men have been so degraded a sex in your eyes that you wont even look at them. Why the fear,if any. Has the public been so letdown for you all .Is there such a dearth of confidence among the people that not even one guy will come to the rescue or help if needed. I totally support the idea that caution and precaution is necessary. But has it ever prevented the calamity from wreaking havoc in the lives of people.
Look in the eye every time you climb . Man woman or child ,it goes to every one. You are neither docile nor powerless. Look and you might find kindness in an old man's eyes. Tiresomeness in a middle aged office goer. Appreciation of your beauty in a young boy's eye . Suspicion is not the only sentiment . Drift away and you might find nirvana full of beautiful grey, blue hazel, black ,green pearls filled with lovely sentiments in their oysters.

And at last the "many" you mentioned if covers both the sexes ,then your comment is totally off topic.
However eye contests are many and definitely is not a test (which i think is wrongly interpreted from my article). But the way you look at a person shows confidence and a lot more things.Kyonki aankhe sab bolti hain.
but now as u suggest if we look men in the eye..esp indian men..den dey ll think we are FEMINISTS,,agressive..confrontational type...domineering type..
etc etc
so we r in a no win situation really anyways
But your title is good ..and has a more direct meaning.
And i think there is no harm in being seen as feminists, aggressive ,domineering ,etc. Men have no problem being seen like this. Why should girls care too much?
And one more thing , No man ever comes to rescue when needed .
Eye-contact is not the test of confidence/integrity. There are many who can lie while staring in your eyes and many introverts who are genius and morally far superior.
