Assignments and practical work in medical field require a lot of patience and are eye opener in terms of what we have and never appreciate.
I went to get my forms done in Intensive Care Nursery where there is combination of acutely ill infants as well as stable and growing premature infants. while nurses were busy filling out forms, I looked around and saw most beautiful children who were suffering from different diseases and glass walls were isolating them from external environment. Heavy machines were monitoring their heart beats. Some were under tube lights making sure their jaundice heels up.
While I was noticing their pretty faces, I heard new voices, looked back and there was family standing at the entrance and deciding who will go first as there is only one person from a family allowed to visit. Waiting for their approval by nurse was standing grand ma. After getting permission she walked in, glanced twice the whole room and with confusion in her voice asked,
“Which one is mine”??
My heart stopped for a moment when nurse pointed towards one infant who was having difficulty in breathing and was under tube light as he was suffering from jaundice too. With heavy steps she approached and stared for a couple of minutes while touching glass walls trying to touch her grand child. Her voice sank in when she asked, “How many chances are of him getting healthy”?? in return nurse nodded and said prayers are what he needs most. She went outside still staring her next generation fighting for his life while her son walked in to see his baby for the very first time. He didn't ask any question rather he stayed quite beside his child…When he walked outside he asked his mother when his wife will be getting discharge from hospital. At that time I really felt empty knowing he was transferred right after he was born and his mother haven’t seen him.
I don't know how it is to hold your baby for the first time after going through nine months of wait and patience but I'm sure watching someone you love the most fighting for their life is the most difficult part of life where you have to impart your faith while every time little piece of you dies inside...
