I hate it when in the middle of doing something extremely important be it an assignment or project i start googling random things. Its like my ego defense mechanism against the huge pile of work at my desk.
Anyway, so today i turned to stupid and useless tabloids about lame celebrities taking digs at each other and what not. It all just makes me think about where our society is going.
Think about it, people might not know who sunita williams is, or kalpana chawla is or maybe who an arundhati roy or barkha dutt is; okay YOU know all of them-good for you, you English speaking upper class elite, but i'm referring to the masses. They won't know about these legends but the masses do know the cine stars. Priyanka chopra, kareena kapoor, mallika sherawat, aishwarya rai, sonam kapoor, kim kardashian (in the west)etc... All this makes me think whether we are increasingly turning out to be an insecure, image conscious society, constantly fussing over the way we look?
It would have been okay if actors and actresses took digs at each other and left it at that; but these days their fans also form large groups and spill negativity all over the net and tabloids, fighting with each other and name calling each other.
And I'm not refering to anyone's work in the industry or outside of it; but just the way they behave in public. Kareena kapoor and Sonam kapoor are usually name calling others, PC and Bebo fights are all over the place and what surprises me is that these people get interviewed for these things? They would leave no opportunity to degrade themselves in public, insulting each other just to rake up some 'masaala' in print and we reward them with the attention? I mean there could be a hundred things I could be doing on the net, but i manage to find myself on a page that talks about who called who what? I mean why is it there in the first place?
Anyway, i am not for curtailment of anyone's right to freedom of expression but i just believe that we are turning into a stupid people. These are who we idolize and look upto? These are our 'heros' and 'stars'? With the fake accent and desperate attempts to fit into the western notion of 'upper class.'
We somehow lose all our objectivity when looking at these actors(most of the mainstream actors do not even know how to act). I think we are blinded by the glamour and their perfected looks so much so that we refuse to see who we turn to worship might not be true to himself or herlself at all, might not have any originality at all!
