Independent India does not have an intellectual class. Are you surprised at this? I am not. How can a nation produce intellectuals when it copies other countries for everything. But we do have pseudo-intellectuals and they are in plenty.

Any basis of this extreme generalization?

Basis is my own experience in England nearly 29 years ago and my knowledge of India. Remember that I have been in Government and academic for 38 years.

India had an intellectual tradition more than a 1000 years ago. There was a break for about 1000 years with some isolated intellectual activities. But they were sporadic. There was no continuity. Whatever systems the British built during 200 years of rule, we continued after 1947 and the process is on. To-day it is on a massive scale. It has come to very important cultural aspects such as communication. I am only giving hints. I can not elaborate in this forum. More than twenty years ago, I gave a public lecture and again about 10 years ago.

But we also continue to keep our old traditions and science. What Britishers implemented here in India like the railways system and all were good things that we adopted and that is a true sign of intellectuals. Shedding ego and accept a change which is good. We need not reinvent the wheel every time, that is the basis of scientific advancement.
And soon after Britishers brought railways to India, our engineers learned the system quickly and were sent to different parts of British empire to setup railways and locomotive factories. That was a good thing.

Whenever you build anything, there is always a core. I am referring to that core which we have been copying all along. That is where intellect comes in. You go around the world and see things and come back and say "why not this or that we do here." This refers to our political system, atomic energy, law and courts, business, film making, etc.

But naqal k liye bhee tu aqal chahiye hoti hai na.... tu that makes u intellectual enough. If you mean that India doesn't have inventors and innovators that's a different thing

Indians are copying masters. No one can deny that. Apart from inventions and discoveries, we are intellectual slaves.

That unfortunately is the biggest problem in the sub continent. Same is here in Pakistan. We r slaves indeed mentally

I do not understand your English.

I spoke about being slaves mentally. And u said you are happy that I got the essence.
What I meant by what I wrote earlier was, the realization that your entire existence is based on being like someone else. Instead of creating your own you are trying to copy others. This I said earlier, is the case with most of us.
This realization not just for yourself but others around you is very hard to take. You may try to find your own might try to create your own but others.... our entire society unfortunately is engulfed in this slavery.
The reality becomes so harsh that you wish that you never realized this in the first place. Not for yourself for u might strive for change. But what about others??? That is when sarcasm and wish full thinking comes in n u end up saying ignorance is bliss
