I still remember when I was in school, there were questions where you are supposed to write one sentence answers. I used to be confused about that one. What do you mean "one sentence"? The answer must be one sentence OR write the answer in just that one line? I was not very bright then you see. So in one exam, I wrote a single sentence and in the next, I crammed in as many sentences in that one line. And man, I bet the teacher must have used some sort of magnifying glass to read those. AND I know for sure, that there were many others who wrote just like me! :) Now, it's amusing. But then, it was terrifying.
I have gone to write exams in all possible weathers. I have traveled in serious heat to far off examination centers, away from my normal comfort zones. I used to wish and hope that I grew up as fast as possible just to escape writing exams. God, I was so naive...
Now, I have come to realize the harsh, brutal and horrifying truth that all our lives, we give exams on various levels. Viva, interviews, boyfriend(s)/girlfriend(s)/friends/relatives/husband/wife questioning, kids questions you name it, we have to answer those.
I think the point of studying (by rote mostly) was to drill in the helplessness that there will be questions rather than actually studying for passing the exams.
I still shudder when someone asks me something. The questions can be as innocent as "Aunty, my ball is in your house. Can I take that?" or something like "Are you sure you don't want this?" or "Who is the Prime Minister of India? Manmohan Singh or Sonia Gandhi?"
May God bless the future generations. They will need more than intelligence or wits to answer the questions that will be asked to them.
