Indian families are often obsessed by the fact that every girl needs to be instilled with cooking skills since early days of her sensible living. Is it really that important? I see neighbors, relatives and many other un-related ones complaining about how their female child runs away from the kitchen, when it comes to cooking. I am not sure at my home anyone would do that but luckily I had developed a liking for cooking since quite an early age.
I hate to see mothers compelling girls to cook and please elders and then later her in-law relations. Is this not a part of something which we call 'female being suppressed'? If cooking is really that important, is it not correct to get all your kids learn it - irrespective of their superior or inferior genders?
Small things but its these that contribute to the overall societal beliefs of female being the 'inferior', 'suppressed' or 'weaker section' of the society.
Thankfully the high charging maids and the simultaneous need to stay away from home for study or work has led even guys to develop this skills on their own. It does not bring in the point that males do not cook or are not interested in it, but since the beginning its thought of as a basic skill for females but an added positive attribute of a male.
