A system remains as good as ever if it is cleaned periodically of the harmful elements or components. This is the reason nature is ever fresh and youthful. But we do not seem to be doing the cleaning as often as we should be doing and so our systems degrade till such time it is degraded so much that a big change or at least a reform becomes inevitable.
